WHAT REALLY HAPPENED ON OUR VW BUS ROAD TRIP – CHEAHA STATE PARK ALABAMA
On June 5th, we got word that a tropical storm was heading our way…but everything felt right! We jumped in our bus around 5:30pm, said goodbye to family members and started trekking West. We made it out of South Carolina and because of the storm, we didn’t stop in Georgia. We kept on moving and crossed the Alabama state line just before sundown. It was getting late, so rather than going into the mountains, we decided to park the bus at a fast food joint and get a few hours of sleep.
The next morning, we made the super-slow drive up Cheaha Mountain, to the State Park, which is the highest point in Alabama (2,407 ft above sea level). We climbed the curvy hills at 20-25mph, for what seemed like hours! It was exciting to finally make it to the top and to our first destination!
We fueled up, using the park’s old-school gas pump and made our way over to the primitive campgrounds to set up for the night. We had seen a lake on our drive to the campsite, so the next day, we brought our pup, Sunday, to take a swim. It felt so good to take a dip and get washed off in that mountain-top oasis. The lake was surrounded by mountains, there was a floating dock in the middle and not a person in sight.
For our last night in Cheaha, we made it to the very top of Cheaha Mountain, where we met a group of people who kindly offered us dinner. It was such a wonderful treat to meet with such good people and to fill our tummies. There was so much peace and quiet up there. Incredible hikes were in every direction, there were magnificent overlooks like the Sleeping Giant and we were ecstatic that Cheaha State Park was our first destination on our cross-country road trip!
With the first leg of our long journey complete, we were ready for what was ahead! See what happens in Chapter 2: What Really Happened On Our VW Bus Road Trip – New Orleans, Louisiana!
