VEGETARIANISM 101

When we began to understand the benefits of a whole foods plant-based diet, our change to Vegetarianism came quite naturally. We were drawn to the wide variety of nutrition found in plant-based foods, many of which had remained a mystery to us for years.

Throughout our younger lives, we were taught to get our “protein” from meat. We were taught to believe that the flesh of another being is good for us, that it will make us strong and keep us healthy. Our families ate meat, our friends ate meat, so why wouldn’t we? What we learned later on, is that it’s worth taking a closer look at why we’re doing what we’re doing (especially normal things, like what we eat) and if there are any other options that might resonate better with who we are individually.

Cultures around the world have lived long, healthier lives, with a meatless, whole foods plant-based diet. Vegetarianism improves the mind and body’s overall health. We’ve experienced it first-hand. You don’t have to look far to find a combination of plant-based foods, that can surpass the nutritional value of meat or animal proteins and assist in a much higher absorption rate of essential amino acids in the body. Some terminal diseases and life-threatening health conditions are treated successfully with nothing other than a plant-based diet and moderate exercise.

Health benefits are one reason to adopt Vegetarianism and for many, morality is another. If taking another’s life for our own consumption is acceptable, what kind of people are we morally? We know we can live healthier lives eating vegetables, seeds, nuts, fungi, grains and fruits…so why take part in the execution of defenseless animals, daily? It’s been reported that millions of animals are killed each day in the U.S. for human consumption…yikes.
