For our fourth wedding anniversary, we canoed 13 miles down the Edisto river in South Carolina to celebrate and stay in an off grid tree house with no electricity or running water. The river trip was beautiful being completely engulfed in nature. The little wood house was a treetop heaven, hidden in the forest by the fresh water. It was private, quiet and the perfect romantic spot for our anniversary.

We pulled the canoe onto the shore and made ourselves at home. We bathed in the river, made food by the fire and used candles, torches and a handy flashlight at night. The two days were spent swimming, walking through the woods, reading and capturing the experience. Although the weather man forecasted rain, somehow it held up. We did enjoy a beautiful lightening storm show on our anniversary night. It was very theatrical.

We enjoyed the food we brought by turning it into delicious feasts we cooked on the little burner in the tree house and outside over a fire. It felt like we had jumped back in time to when things were way more simple, time went by slowly and the little things were enjoyed. We felt at home, at peace and returned to “the real world” reassured simple is the way to go.
