SNOWBOARDING AT WOLF CREEK SKI AREA | COLORADO WINTER VIDEO

by | 2018 | The Lills, Travel

Wolf Creek Ski Area is renowned for getting the most snow each year in Colorado. Wolf Creek Pass, which gets people to and from the ski area, is a high mountain pass that carves through the Continental Divide in the San Juan mountains, at an elevation of 10,856 feet above sea level. The views are stunning and it is renowned for avalanches, falling rocks, treacherous driving over steep mountain passes with no guardrail, blizzards, icy road conditions and more. Somehow, we didn’t see any real snow in Colorado until late January. That’s when the area came alive.

Poof, the town of Pagosa Springs was hopping with people. Trucks filled the streets, carting their snowmobiles and snow-gear. The ski shops were packed, the hotels were packed and people from everywhere were buzzing around the little town. The two of us jumped into snow-mode too and got hooked up with free snowboards and boots from new friends. We jumped in our VW bus and trekked 3,000+ feet, slowly up the mountain.

The first day on the mountain was exhilarating. We got our half-day beginner slope tickets ($28 each) around 1:30pm and raced to the bunny slopes to get some practice in. We didn’t have much time, as the last lifts took off at 4:00pm, but we had so much fun flying down the slopes. Nearing the end of our first day snowboarding at Wolf Creek, the two of us noticed a powdery avenue we could take on our final rides. Rather than going the path most traveled, we spontaneously threw ourselves into waist deep snow. It was hilarious and very difficult to get out of. We got a couple smoother rides in and felt prepped for our next day on the slopes.

The second day, we were sure to get there for a full half-day of riding ($55 each). We skipped the bunny slopes and took the lift straight to the most difficult trails. We jumped right in, flew over the powdery snow and enjoyed long-lasting feelings of adrenaline, excitement and happiness. There were a few more people at the ski area that day, but it was wonderful to get to see people of all ages skiing and snowboarding around us. The little ones were so cute and we were impressed by some expert’s skills. We had so much fun riding down the snow and we were completely satisfied by our time at Wolf Creek. It was much more laid back and quiet than a lot of other ski resorts we had been to and we had a ton of very peaceful moments to ourselves, which let us take in all of the gorgeous surroundings.

The views from the top of the San Juan mountains (11,900+ feet) were outstanding and something inside of us felt awoken and freed. It was therapeutic and a much needed experience, having not touched snow for so long. It helped mark the beginning of our winter fun in Colorado and we’ll never forget it.
