GROWING TOMATOES

by | 2017 | Food, The Lills, Tomato

Tomatoes find themselves in our daily meals and we can’t get enough of ’em. The only problem is, the average U.S. grocery store tomatoes are most commonly hit with heavy chemicals and pesticides. They are picked green, put into methane tanks (to make them red) and they are covered in layers of wax, before hitting grocery stands.

Rather than buying genetically modified tomatoes from the store, last season we picked up organic plants from our local farmers market and began our own tomato garden. A variety of young tomatoes found a home in our beds. As they matured, little green tomatoes began popping up everywhere. We picked a beauty from the plant, slapped it on a cutting board, cut a few slices, hit them with pink Himalayan sea salt and ground pepper and mm mm mm! They tasted far better than conventionally grown tomatoes or organic tomatoes from a big brand grocery store.

Now that we’re on the road, we are unable to plant and grow, so we keep a look out for organic farms, groceries and markets to enjoy delicious vegetables, herbs, fruits and other healthy ingredients. It’s been an adventure seeking out the food that makes us happy and we, at times, have had to go to great lengths to ensure a healthy diet.

As long as we the people keep consenting to, supporting and relying on big corporate brands to create and supply our food chain, all the great tasting organic foods, that are so good for us, will become even harder to find. We see more and more people saying no to processed, synthetic and genetically altered food. We see more small permacultures popping up and a comeback of victory gardens too, which gives us great hope. If you’d like the benefits of feeding your family year-round and a project everyone can enjoy, start your own victory garden!
