A CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING PICNIC IN THE SNOW | COLORADO WINTER VIDEO

by | 2018 | The Lills, Travel

There are no words to describe what a wonderful time we had in Arizona. We were so thankful to get to visit with family, see the mind-blowing sandstone formations and the incredible Horseshoe Bend in Page, AZ. Another highlight was getting to see the Grand Canyon, which moved us deeply.

It was nearing the end of October, when we decided to flip about and head back to Colorado for some winter fun. Earlier in the summer, we had enjoyed some time in Pagosa Springs, but we didn’t spend much time on top of the mountain. This trip, we decided to suit up in snow gear, hit the mountain and have a cross-country skiing adventure!

A Winter Picnic In The Snow | The Lills

We were gifted by new friends with free cross-country ski, boot and pole rentals and made our way to 10,000 feet. Rather than just skiing up a trail and scooting back down, the two of us decided to bring along a winter picnic, so we could stop along the way and soak in the natural beauty. We brought a little sled, picnic basket, silverware, plates and cups, all that we had found at a local thrift store for just $10 total. We also picked up a few treat day bites, like a delicious coconut macaroon, raspberry tart, freshly made bread from the bakery, some exquisite cheese and homemade juice.
About 5 minutes into our cross-country skiing picnic adventure, we were greeted by a wonderful couple who gave us awesome pointers on how to cross-country ski. They explained, it is easiest to push off, keep your skis to the snow (so they don’t ice) and use your motion to propel you forward. It was really helpful to receive instructions right off the bat.

We skied up and down the stunning trail, until we found a cozy little spot to have our picnic. We knew it was the spot, but getting there was tricky. We journeyed off the beaten path with our sled and goodies, into the powdery snow. Everything became so quiet and peaceful, as we began to nibble on our treats. All we could hear was the wind, every now and again. It was a day we will always remember and something we would definitely do again. Check back soon for more from our cross-country adventure!
